Men’s Fragrance 101

If you’ve never put time into purchasing a fragrance, it’s important to understand how a scent is developed. The term ‘notes’ are used to describe the different levels of scent and are a good reference for selecting the strongest note to suit your style.

The top fragrance note

The top note is the lighter smell of the fragrance, typically lasting from 15 minutes to 2 hours. Top note scents are generally light and refreshing containing citrus, fruity scents, powdery scents, aquatic or beachy scents, and some spices.

Recommended light & fresh scents

The middle fragrance note

Middle notes (or heart notes are otherwise known) develop after the top note wears off, and usually last 3-5 hours after being sprayed. The top and middle notes are designed to build off each other to create a lasting accent. These notes consist of fruity and floral scents such as jasmine, or green scents such as forest or nature. Look for a stronger middle note in your fragrance if you enjoy lighter floral or fruity accents.

The base fragrance note

The base note are the bolder notes of the scent which become more noticeable as worn throughout the day. Base notes lay the foundation and will determine how long the fragrance lasts on your skin, usually lasting from 5 to 10 hours. Common base notes found in our fragrances are sandalwood, moss, vetiver, vanilla, tar, leather, smoke, tobacco, and musk.
